Operator of Four vessels…the Portland Spirit, Willamette Star, Crystal Dolphin and Explorer

Prior to 1995:

Co-founder American Waterways, Inc in 1993 as Vice President for Operations and operated whale-watch, overnight and dinner vessels.

1991-1993:

Worked for Spirit Cruises and was general manager for two vessels.

1989-1991

Earned a Masters in Business Administration from the University of  Virginia.

1981-1989

United States Naval officer, final rank of Lieutenant.  Served on the USS Trenton, LPD-14, USS Comte de Grasse DD-974, and the Pacific Board of Inspection and Survey.  Participated in the liberation of Grenada, peace keeping in Beirut, Arctic Ocean patrol, and two deployments to the Middle East.

1977-1981

Earned a BA in History and Government from Centre College of Kentucky.

1959-current

Raised in rural western New York. Son of Brock Yates, automotive journalist, novelist, and screenplay writer.  Reside in Milwaukie, Oregon with wife, Margaret Yates, and have five dogs.

Awards:  Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Members Choice Award from Portland Oregon Visitors Association 1998, and Governor of Oregon first Tourism Sustainability Award in 2008.

Boards/Associations (past and present): Broadway Rose Theater Company in Tigard, OR, Portland Rose Festival, Centre College Alumni Association, Passenger Vessel Association, Central Eastside Industrial Council,  and Oregon Maritime Museum. Portland Oregon Visitor Association,  and High Officer in Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem (Knights Templar).
